Director's Note

So many times, our journey into the forest leads us on a path of exploration, self reflection, and finding one’s own courage. The story of Hansel and Gretel shows us that sometimes we don’t have to always take that journey alone.

Dramaturges' Note

How do you approach the world? Do you go boldly with reckless abandon? Or are you cautious and plan ahead? Do you rely on your head or your heart to guide you? Hansel and Gretel begin the opera with childlike naivety, but find themselves in a dark and scary world that requires bravery and cunning to survive. People are not what they seem, and neither are the houses they occupy. The woods seem to mess with their senses; was that actually a face in a tree? Or just a trick of the eye? Is the bird song overhead sweet or sinister?

The cast and production team loved exploring how the titular children in the show approach the world they occupy. We want the audience to feel as much a part of this world and story as the characters on stage. Therefore, we invite you to partake in a Scavenger Hunt of the opera. Visit the Homepage at the top to discover how you can venture into the woods with Hansel and Gretel in a unique way.
