Will-O'-the-Wisps (Lighting)
About Will-O'-The-Wisp
If you spot some floating lights in the depth of the brush... proceed with caution! This phantom ball of light in the wilderness is known to lead many lone travelers to their demise, a dangerous land, or perhaps a deep hole in a bog or a kingdom ruled by vicious fairies.
They are small apparitions that appear innocent and alluring at first site, but turn out to be malevolent.
The original name derives from the story about a troublemaking blacksmith named Will who carried a light.
The most fascinating thing about these ghostly lights is that they are based on a REAL natural phenomenon. Modern scientists have discovered that will-o'-the-wisps are caused by marsh gases released by decomposing plants. One of the gases, methane, is highly flammable and can easily catch fire when it makes contact with fresh air.
There are iterations of the will-o'-the-wisps all over the globe! Britain and Ireland have the most variations of names (this has inspired the jack-o'-lantern), but stories about these balls of light are found across many continents!
